In May 2018, K9 Global Rescue entered a dog meat farm with local police and city environmental authorities. The team had visited the site before. This time, the violations were immediately clear.
Near the entrance, one cage held seven dogs. In the back of that cage was an English Setter. She was shaking uncontrollably, clearly traumatized, and appeared to be a stolen pet.
With authorities present, the farm owner was questioned. He admitted the dog could have been stolen, though he claimed he did not know. The K9GR team insisted that she be turned over. The owner resisted and wanted payment, but K9GR does not pay for dogs. Paying a dog meat farm only gives the owner money to buy or steal more dogs. After the threat of charges and fines, the owner agreed to release her to K9 Global Rescue.
The team named her Jesse. A quick triage showed she was not only traumatized, but also suffering from pneumonia and severe malnutrition. On the ride to the veterinarian, Jesse curled into the lap of Jon Barocas in the front seat and shook uncontrollably. After a few minutes, the shaking stopped. Her eyes brightened. She understood the team was not there to hurt her. They were there to save her.
Jesse was treated by a veterinarian for five days, tested negative for disease, and then moved into foster care for five weeks. She weighed 13 pounds when she was rescued. Today, she weighs 35 pounds.
Her transformation from a traumatized, sick dog into a healthy, loving companion has been extraordinary. Jesse was adopted by Jon and now lives with his family. Her life is a reminder of why this work matters: every dog deserves safety, care, and the chance to live without fear.
